My work begins where language fails.

I paint what history has chosen not to remember — the women who were taken, the names that were erased, the bodies that were reduced to their usefulness. Not to document their suffering. To insist on their presence.

I was born in Madagascar, in a family where art was not decoration but necessity. I grew up with the Sikidy — the ancestral practice of divination through seeds, reading fate in the arrangement of matter. This shaped how I see painting: not as representation, but as a system of signs that reveals what is hidden beneath the visible surface.

My practice moves between acrylic and oil on canvas, ink and charcoal on paper. Each medium carries its own weight. Oil slows me down, it demands patience, accumulation, time. Ink moves fast, like memory when it finally breaks through. I work in series because no single canvas can hold what I am trying to say. Archives holds the memory of enslaved women. Heritage holds the question of what survives colonisation. Sikidy holds the spiritual cartography of a land that taught me to read the world differently. The Quiet Ones holds the silence that violence imposes and the dignity that outlasts it.

My newest series Opacités marks a shift. I am no longer painting what was done to people. I am painting people who refuse to be read entirely. Portraits who meet your gaze without offering you an explanation. The face as border. The right not to be transparent. The right to exist beyond what others can understand of you.

I do not ask my subjects to be legible. I do not ask my paintings to be comfortable. I ask them to be present — with the full weight of everything they carry and everything they have chosen not to show.

Five of my works are now travelling to the Moon, part of the Lunar Codex, a permanent cultural archive beyond Earth. I think about this often. Not as an achievement, but as a statement of intent : some memories must be kept beyond the reach of those who tried to erase them.
